Mario Gomez headed home in the second half to give Germany a 1-0 victory over Portugal in Saturday night's Euro 2012 Group B clash in Lviv.

Sami Khedira's deflected cross from the right flank was powerfully headed into the corner of the net by Bayern Munich striker Gomez after he rose highest in the area in the 72nd minute.

Germany had begun brightly, with Gomez testing out Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio with a header before Lukas Podolski followed up in the next attack with a low drive. Arsenal-bound Podolski then wastefully blasted over as he connected poorly with a cross from the left as Joachim Low's side dominated without creating too many more chances.

Instead it was their opponents who had the best chance of the opening period just before the interval, defender Pepe's shot coming back off the crossbar before bouncing off the goal-line and away from danger. Portugal improved after the restart and right-back Jerome Boateng had to pull off a last-gasp tackle to stop Cristiano Ronaldo getting his shot away.

Germany continued to look dangerous on the break though and with the bench stirring as birthday boy Miroslav Klose readied himself to come on, Gomez nodded home to score what proved to be the winner. But there was still time for a few scares, with Manuel Neuer denying Ronaldo and substitute Silvestre Varela before Nani's shot was blocked by the shoulder of Holger Badstuber when the Manchester United winger should have done better.

FULL-TIME: GERMANY WIN! The strongly fancied Germans have held on for a vital three points in the 'Group of Death'. This game was brought to life by Gomez's emphatic header and Germany have their reward for claiming the vast majority of possession against a negative Portugal side. Thanks for joining Orange's live commentary this evening. Stay tuned for the full match report.

90+4 mins: Bender comes on Muller for Germany before Alves heads over at the far post. That should seal all three points for the Germans.

90+2 mins: Ronaldo scampers free down the left side and drags the ball back into the path of Nani. He sidefoots it straight into the back of Badstuber's shoulder. Corner Portugal.

90 mins: Three minutes for Portugal to find a late leveller.

87 mins: Some much needed fresh legs are on for this tiring German unit with Ozil coming off for fellow playmaker Gotze.

86 mins: More opportunities for Portugal. Hummels takes the ball off the diving head of Varela deep inside the area before Nani fires wide of the left post.

84 mins: Portugal are finishing much the stronger side as Veloso sees his shot deflected over. Moments later, Nani rattles the crossbar unintentionally with a overhit cross. Germany are hanging on a little here.

82 mins:Ronaldo goes close! He cuts inside and on to his favoured right foot before forcing Neuer to tip awkwardly wide with a low swerving shot.

79 mins: Changes now being made by either side. Goalscorer Gomez is coming off for Klose and Varela replaces Meireles for Portugal.

79 mins: Changes now being made by either side. Goalscorer Gomez is coming off for Klose and Varela replaces Meireles for Portugal.

76 mins: Gomez is inches away from making it 2-0! He sticks out a boot to try and meet Muller's low cross from the right but it flashes agonisingly past him.

73 MINS: SUPER MARIO SCORES!Germany finally make their superior possession count! GOMEZ, who was just about to be subbed for Klose, gets in front of his marker and steers Khedira's deflected cross from the right expertly past Patricio into the far corner with is head!

70 mins: Boateng is yellow carded after Ronaldo gets the better of him this time in the centre circle. It also gives Portugal the chance to bring on Oliveira for the frustrated Postiga.

68 mins: Muller whips a low outswinging ball round the back of the Portuguese defence but Patricio is alert to the teasing cross. It's just as well because Gomez was poised to shoot.

66 mins: Nani hits top speed down the right side but Badstuber comes right across to win the ball back and win a free-kick deep in his own half.

John, Tredegar"germany to win"

63 mins: Amazing tackle from Boateng! Veloso plays a stunning reverse pass into Ronaldo who sees his shot magnificently blocked by the recovering full-back. He's injured himself in the process but is ok again after some treatment.

60 mins: Yellow card! Coentrao is now in the book after a late tackle from behind. He motions it's his first mis-timed challenge but the ref isn't having any of it.

57 mins: Pereira's punt upfield is charged down and Germany swarm forward. Podolski crosses from the left but Gomez can't keep the header down from the edge of the area. Klose appears to be going through the latter stages of his warm-up...

55 mins: Ronaldo, from an inside left position, pops the ball over to the far post looking for Postiga but the Real Zaragoza striker is flagged for offside.

52 mins: Back come Germany with Ozil, who has been quiet by his high standards so far. He drifts over to the right flank before belting in a cross that sails over Muller's head.

51 mins:Not one but two quick corners for Portugal who are starting to look dangerous now. The Germans though are standing defiant and are able to clear well away.

49 mins:All of sudden Nani dribbles into space near the right byline for Portugal. He pops the ball into the penalty area but there's Hummels to head acrobatically behind.

46 mins: Similar to the first-half, Germany are very quick launch an attack. Muller's shot is initially blocked by Pereira and then Meireles crucially gets back to divert Gomez's strike away. Khedira then heads wide from the resulting corner.

45 mins:The teams filtering back out into the cauldron of vocal and riled up Germans. The 1996 winners will restart the match with both sides unchanged.

HALF-TIME: The referee calls time on an edgy first-half which has been lightly peppered with chances for both teams. The best falling to Real Madrid's Pepe who belted the crossbar from close range. Will the deadlock be broken in the second half? Join me in fifteen minutes to find out.

45 mins: Two minutes of time added on. The German supporters by the way have been warned that the match will be abandoned if they continue to throw soft missles on to the pitch. Bit drastic if you ask me.

44 mins: Portugal hit the woodwork! They win a corner from the right which falls to Pepe who sidefoots it onto the crossbar. A few Portuguese players are claiming it's gone in but the ball stays bang on the line. So close!

42 mins: Deafening whistles from the German crowd who are incensed by the decision that Badstuber is in the book for clipping Nani. I don't know what they are moaning about really as he clearly made contact.

39 mins: Nice spell here for Germany. Again Podolski goes undetected over the left wing but his cross towards Muller is cut out in the penalty area. Muller then does a chance to shoot seconds later however he drags it woefully wide.

36 mins: Ooh for a second there I thought Gomez had escaped the imposing figure of Pepe. The Real Madrid defender matches the striker stride for stride in the penalty area and is eventually rewarded with a free-kick.

36 mins: Ooh for a second there I thought Gomez had escaped the imposing figure of Pepe. The Real Madrid defender matches the striker stride for stride in the penalty area and is eventually rewarded with a free-kick.

33 mins: Podolski balloons one over the bar from 20 yards out before Ronaldo is immediately surrounded by white shirts just as he was lining up to shoot.

30 mins: Well half an hour gone in Kviv and I think we can file this match under the slow-burner category. Ronaldo and Schweinsteiger are at the heart of things for their respective nations but are both yet to create a clear-cut chance.

27 mins: Great vision by the Milan Baros lookalike Khedira, who spots the unmarked Podolski coming in from the left channel. He drifts the ball over to him but the forward gets his volley all wrong.

25 mins: Gomez has the ball in the back of the net but the French referee has brought play back for a dangerous German free-kick. It's left to Schweinsteiger who fires straight into the strong red wall.

22 mins: There's a mix-up at the back for the Portuguese and the ball breaks for Schweinsteiger. He attempts to slot his Bayern Munich team-mate Gomez in but Alves nudges him out of the way.

19 mins: Germany now are hogging the ball, with Schweinsteiger dropping the deepest in midfield to try and find that killer pass. The two sets of fans are having an almighty sing-off which is making for a quality atmosphere.

16 mins: Ronaldo hugs the left touchline and embarks on his first mazy run of the match. He gets the better of Boateng, and drills a dangerous ball across the face of goal where it's cleared behind for a corner. Schweinsteiger manages to flick the ball away from the area.

13 mins: Postiga picks up the first booking in front a hostile and majority German crowd. He clips the very over dramatic Neuer with his trailing leg and the ref sprints over to flash the card.

11 mins: The ball falls to a unsuspecting Ozil on the edge of the area. He tries to readjust his feet but Pereira is there to tidy up. Then, Portugal try to break with Veloso however his ball intended for Ronaldo is way overhit.

9 mins: Germany carve out their second meaningful attack of their campaign. Muller's ball from the right evades Gomez but falls to Arsenal new boy Podolski who guides a feeble effort straight to the Portugal keeper.

6 mins: Sharp movement from Postiga who breaks the German defensive line well down the left. He heads towards the byline but trips up, allowing the ball to trickle over for a goal-kick.

3 mins: Coentrao bombs forward like he so often does for Real Madrid and wins a corner for the Portuguese. Meireles is bombarded with screwed up paper missles from the German crowd as he goes over to take it. No problems there for Neuer who claims.

1 min: Germany are quick out of the traps as Boateng plays a lovely early ball in, where Patricio holds on to Gomez's glancing header.

0 mins: Portugal in their all-red strips will kick-off, playing from right to left as I see it. This is the fourth meeting between Germany and Portugal at European Championships, with Germany winning 3-2 in Euro 2008, Portugal winning 3-0 in Euro 2000 and the sides drawing 0-0 at Euro 1984.

Bam - "germans to win 4~2 podolski 2 hit 2 goals.wat a player he will be for my arseal come on germanns"

1941: The national anthems are being belted out as I type. I'm really, really looking foward to this game it should be a cracker. Any more predictions from you lot before we get started?

JC - "Portugal will pull a surprise out of the bag and win 2-1."

1925: All the pre-match talk was about who would lead the line for the Germans. Well I can reveal super Mario Gomez has been given the nod ahead of Miroslav Klose. Per Mertesacker is also not 100% fit so it will be Mats Hummels and Holger Badstuber at the heart of the defence. For Portugal, Paulo Bento can call upon star winger Luis Nani even though he's been struggling with injury.

1920: Welcome to Orange's second Euro 2012 installment from Group B as the well fancied Germans take on strong outsiders Portugal in Lviv. We've already seen one shock this evening. Will Portugal spring another? You can let me know your thoughts via the box on the right of your screen.
