FULL-TIME: CITY BACK ON TRACK! A vital win for the reigning champions who momentarily close the gap to Man United to three points. The Red Devils are in action shortly against Sunderland. Newcastle stay in 14th with a disappointing 17 points from 17 games. Stay tuned for the full-match report.

90+2 mins: Man City have three-on-one but Dzeko passes it straight to Perch who clears behind!

90 mins:Three minutes of time added on with Newcastle trying to finish with a flourish.

87 mins: Aguero's in again after a lung-bursting run down the right wing. He cuts inside before scooping the ball wide past the oncoming Krul.

85 mins: Aguero is a whisker away from the putting the fairy on top of the christmas tree with a strike that bends just past Krul's right post.

82 mins: Another sub for Newcastle with the young Ferguson coming on for Simpson.

79 mins:Changes for both sides now as Lescott replaces Tevez for City and Shola Ameobi comes on for Cisse.

77 MINS: THAT SHOULD CLINCH IT FOR CITY! Newcastle haven't turned their pressure into a second goal and now looks to have proved costly. Silva plays the ball to Zabaleta on the overlap after seeing his crossing options blocked off. The marauding full-back then drags it back for Y TOURE to turn in at the near post. Cue the Toure brothers song!

76 mins: A dummy from Gutierrez takes him over to the right byline and his cross needs Hart at full stretch to palm the ball out of harm's way.

74 mins: Newcastle make a change of their own with Tiote coming off for Marveaux.

71 mins: Substitute Kolarov is being subbed off himself after picking up a knock on his left thigh. On comes Dzeko to replace him.

69 mins: City launch a counter where Aguero finds space near the left byline after a sharp turn. He pops the ball up to the far post where Tevez's outrageous overhead kick is met with ironic cheers by the Toon Army.

66 mins: Back come City with the twinkle toes of Aguero getting the better of Anita chasing back. He spreads the ball out wide to Kolarov, whose cross is coolly dealt with by Coloccini.

63 mins: Newcastle are well on top now. The ball sits up nicely for Anita to strike on the edge of the area but Garcia deflects behind. From the resulting corner, it falls to Ba at the far post who, like Santon, belts the ball into the side netting.

60 mins: That's a fantastic cross in by Zabaleta, finding that half yard to drill a low ball in across the face of goal. Nobody in blue though was taking a gamble inside the six yard box.

58 mins: Newcastle fly forward once again but Anita can only win a corner after Cisse overcooks what was a simple ball through. City clear to Tiote who smacks it wide on the first-time volley.

55 mins: So Newcastle have had another brilliant first ten minutes but they cannot afford to let City implement their silky passing style as they couldn't cope with it in the first half. K Toure and Perch are booked within seconds of each other.

53 mins:Oh! Newcastle should be level! A sharp turn by Cisse sees him with a clear sight at goal but he loses all composure and spoons it over the bar. What a chance!

51 MINS: GAME ON! NEWCASTLE SCORE! The Man City defence fall asleep! Coloccini helps the ball into the box from the left and BA is left all alone to head it over a commited Hart and into the back of the net!

49 mins: Santon does well to wriggle free of his man in the area but he can only thrash his shot into the side netting.

45 mins: Welcome back for the second half where surely there's no way back for Newcastle from here? It's the hosts that get us restarted

HALF-TIME: The referee calls time on a very eventful first 45 minutes up on Tyneside. Newcastle dominated the opening ten minutes but slick build-up play from Manchester City has seen them waltz their way to a comfortable lead and they now look on course to get their season back on track. Join me for the second half in 15 minutes time.

45 mins: Three minutes of time added on at St James' Park.

42 mins:The game has calmed down now as we approach the half-time. Newcastle look like they have been knocked for six since that second goal went in.

39 MINS: CITY DOUBLE THEIR ADVANTAGE! That could be the goal that kills off Newcastle already! A corner from left is met well by GARCIA, who sees his header go in at the far post via a flick off Santon's legs. Man City are cruising.

37 mins: Nasri's having to come off after pulling his groin so on comes Kolarov to replace him. Striaght from the restart, Aguero is booked for kicking the ball away after Tevez concedes a free-kick.

35 mins: It's been very stop-start in the last few minutes with Tevez and now Nasri needing medical attention. The home fans are getting increasingly frustrated.

31 mins: Cisse finds space and lets rip from around 30 yards out. It's a good strike but Hart is able to see that one fly over the bar.

28 mins: Simpson's in the book for an awful yet clumsy challenge on Silva. Then, City's slick passing sees Aguero with another clear sight at goal but he drags his shot wide! This a such a frenetic game.

25 mins: Out of nowhere, Man City have Hart to thank again for keeping the scoreline at 1-0. Firstly he has to hack away ahead of Ba and Cisse before diving low to his left to stop Williamson's effort from crawling in.

22 mins: Even when Newcastle have an attacking free-kick they end up defending. Toon have a three-on-three situtation but they come away unscathed as Anita makes a good tackle on Tevez.

James, Woking -"cisse to score a hat trick today 3-2 newcastle"

19 mins: This is far too easy for Man City at the moment. Nasri pretty much walks with the ball towards goal and sees his delicate shot flick of the post. It rebounds to Aguero, who looks nailed on the score with the goal gaping, but back comes Williamson with a fantastic interception near his own goal-line.

15 mins: Another Man City charge is stopped in its tracks by Williamson, who picks up the first yellow for wiping Tevez out. From the resulting free-kick, Tevez very nearly gets a toe on Nasri's sidefooted pass at the back post.

13 mins: It nearly gets a whole lot worse for Newcastle as Aguero and Silva tear open the left side with a slick interchange. The Spaniard then squares to Tevez, whose fierce volley is repelled by the alert Krul.

10 MINS: CITY TAKE THE LEAD! A lovely goal from the visitors! Yaya Toure threads the ball majestically through to Nasri down the inside-right channel, and he squares it to AGUERO for the simplest of tap ins!

8 mins: Krul does well with his legs to stop Tevez's strike in the area but the flag's up anyway as Aguero passed to his fellow compatriot in an offside position.

5 mins: This is a good start from the hosts. Anita's belted free-kick is flicked on well by Williamson and Hart just gets there ahead of the lurking Ba.

2 mins: Newcastle nearly take an early lead! Cisse does well to wrap a right foot around a right wing cross played behind him but he is denied by a sharp stop from Hart.

0 mins: We're underway at a sunny St James' Park where Man City, in their light blue shirts, kick us off.

1200: We have the teams in so scroll down to see how today's two sides will line-up. Newcastle are without Hatem Ben Arfa after suffering a setback in his recovery from injury. But Jonas Gutierrez returns to the starting XI. City boss Roberto Mancini drops striker Mario Balotelli altogether (suggesting another fall-out) and recalls Carlos Tevez. Vincent Kompany is missing after he picked up a groin injury in the Manchester derby so Kolo Toure starts.

match report

Manchester City bounced back from last week's derby defeat in perfect style by producing an impressive performance to beat Newcastle United 3-1 at St James' Park.

The Premier League champions did their best to live up to Roberto Mancini's assertion that City are still a better team than their local rivals as first-half goals from Sergio Aguero and Javi Garcia put the visitors in command.

Demba Ba's header early in the second half gave an improved Newcastle side a glimmer of hope until Yaya Toure's goal ensured the Magpies were consigned to a sixth league defeat in seven games.

Newcastle were almost in front inside the opening two minutes when Papiss Cisse's first-time shot produced an excellent save on the stretch from Joe Hart, but it was City who struck first on 10 minutes.

An exquisite pass from Yaya Toure split the Newcastle defence and played in Samir Nasri, who unselfishly squared for the unmarked Aguero to roll the ball into an empty net.

The goal invigorated City as the champions' beguiling pass-and-move football perplexed Newcastle, who needed keeper Tim Krul to save with his legs from Carlos Tevez before Mike Williamson blocked Aguero's shot after Nasri had struck the post.

The hosts were largely a threat from set-pieces in the first half as Williamson's volley forced another low save out of Hart before Aguero shot wide at the opposite end following another mesmerising move from City.

Krul's outstretched foot diverted a Tevez shot wide before City grabbed a second on 39 minutes when Garcia met David Silva's corner and Davide Santon made a hash of trying to clear the Spaniard's header off the line.

A half-time interval was just what Newcastle needed and Alan Pardew's men were quickly out of the blocks as Santon came close to atoning for his error by drilling into the side-netting.

On 51 minutes, City were punished for some slack defending as Fabricio Coloccini hooked the ball back into the penalty area and Ba was left unmarked to head past Hart, who was stranded in no man's land.

An equaliser almost arrived two minutes later after Cisse's clever touch created a yard of space, but the Senegal striker's shot flashed over the crossbar.

Newcastle's second-half approach carried a far greater tempo and purpose, but their hopes of completing the comeback were dashed with 12 minutes to go when Yaya Toure scored from close range after a neat build-up involving Silva and Pablo Zabaleta. The Magpies tried to offer another response as Ba's powerful drive flew over and substitute Shola Ameobi saw a header comfortably saved by Hart.

But City could easily have increased their advantage late on as Aguero arced one effort just wide of the post before the Argentinian's dinked attempt over Krul drifted away from goal.
