live commentary

90+3 mins: That's full time! Saints are out of the bottom three with their third draw on the trot, ending Arsenal's run of four wins and seeing them lose some ground in the race for the Champions League places.

90+2 mins: Puncheon has a crack from distance but it belts Vermaelen and is cleared.

90 mins: Three minutes added on with Arsenal finishing with a flourish. Gibbs is played in down the left, he crosses and it's cut out by Yoshida for a corner - which is well defended. A frustrated Wenger is bellowing orders.

88 mins: Fine footwork by Puncheon to create space for the shot but his 15-yard angled drive is drilled straight at Szczesny!

87 mins: Safe hands from Boruc - about time too - as he claims a high ball in the box after Saints fail to clear.

86 mins: De Ridder picks up a quickfire booking after coming on as sub for bringing Sagna down.

Ben: "if arsenal get anything from this game then it's a complete injustice!"

84 mins: Side netting! Gervinho cuts in from the left on to his right peg and lets fly from 18 yards, sending it a yard wide of the left-hand upright!

83 mins: Final change for the Saints sees De Ridder come on for own-goal scorer Guly.

82 mins: Gervinho tricks his way down the left wing but his ball infield is ten yards from the nearest purple shirt.

80 mins: The Gunners go close! Walcott does well to get a cross in of any sort after running the ball wide, it's cleared to Arteta whose 25-yard rocket bends wide of the right stick!

79 mins: Rodriguez wins a corner for Saints on the left flank which Szczesny punches clear. Saints keep the pressure on though, Cork's cross being cleared before the whistle goes for a high boot by Guly.

77 mins: Second change for the hosts, goalscorer Ramirez being replaced by homegrown teen Ward-Prowse.

74 mins: First change for the Saints, Rodriguez coming on for Lambert. Arsenal make their second and third subs, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Cazorla making way for Ramsey and Gervinho.

72 mins: Big call from the linesman! Ramirez fires home a lofted through ball but the flag goes up. He wasn't offside so it looks like he's given it for a little push on Koscielny as he tried to head the through ball clear.

69 mins: Confusion between Puncheon and Ramirez lets Arsenal off with Saints in a promising position on the edge of the box. Arsenal then break and Giroud's first-time ball plays Walcott in but his angled drive is straight at Boruc from 12 yards.

66 mins: Arteta gives away a free-kick 30 yards out but the delivery's over everyone and straight through to Szczesny.

64 mins: Half-chance for Puncheon after a neat ball by Lambert but he bangs his ten-yarder into the side netting from the right of the box!

62 mins: Schneiderlin's first in the book for clattering Cazorla in midfield.

60 mins: Schneiderlin crosses into the six-yard box, Szczesny beats it away unconvincingly but Lambert slips while trying to dig his studs in and get a shot away!

59 mins: Wenger makes his first change, Giroud coming on for Podolski.

57 mins: Walcott cuts in onto his right peg and has a dig from 20 yards but it hits Yoshida's trailing left and rebounds to safety.

55 mins: Cracking effort by Guly! He cuts in from the left and drives towards the left post, Szczesny beating it round the woodwork. The corner comes off Sagna's knee in the six-yard box and forces Szczesny into a brilliant stop on the line!

52 mins: The flag's up for offside against Lambert as he latches on to a ball over the top down the left flank.

50 mins: Wakey wakey! Fonte's weak backpass from 20 yards nearly lets Walcott in but Boruc hoofs clear just ahead of the striker.

47 mins: Lambert gets his head on a lofted ball into the box but he's under pressure, it's straight up and down and cleared.

46 mins: Saints get the second half started with no subs to report, playing left to right.

Alex, Cornwall: "The gunners will turn on the style in this second half, I'm not at all worried :S"

Chris, Exeter: "Dont worry,Wenger-still loadsa time 4 Cazorla & Co 2 go down in an 'Emirate-style' heap!"

45+1 mins: That's half time! Saints will feel hard done by to be level at the break having dictated most of the first 45. Ramirez fired them in front after some ropey defending by the Gunners ten minutes before the break, before Guly put through his own net from a Walcott free-kick six minutes later. Keep your thoughts coming via the box on the right, and join me for the second half from 1835.

45 mins: There's one minute added on as Walcott has the ball in the net but the flag's up for offside against the former Saint.

44 mins: Lovely ball in from the right by Oxlade-Chamberlain, raking it right across the six-yard box but it's too much of stretch for the purple shirts in the area.

41 mins: ARSENAL ARE LEVEL! OWN GOAL BY GULY! Walcott sends in a free-kick from the left, and facing his own goal Guly chucks a leg out and pokes the ball past Boruc!

38 mins: Arteta, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sagna try to pick out an opening down the right but the Ox's cross is cut out. Sagna then hooks one in but again Saints stand firm.

Bill: "well who would of guessed that"

35 mins: RAMIREZ FIRES THE SAINTS IN FRONT! Arsenal defend like they're nursing New Year's Day hangovers, Vermaelen and Sagna both making a hash of clearing the danger before the loose ball falls to Ramirez 22 yards out and he thrashes home low past Szczesny!

33 mins: Cazorla's irked as Sagna misplaces a simple pass to him. Frustration's creeping in as Saints continue to keep the ball well.

Julie, Eastbourne: "Happy new year one and all. Cant see another 6 - 1 , but think 2 - 1 TO Arsenal."

30 mins: Koscielny hangs a leg out on the edge of the box and Ramirez tumbles into the area after going past him. Think Arsenal are lucky to get away with that - it didn't look like a dive by the Uruguayan.

28 mins: Offside flags apiece against Sagna and Ramirez.

26 mins: Arsenal win a corner down the right, Boruc is looking Saints' weak link so far and bounces on his toes before the ball comes in, he's spared having to make the catch though as it's headed clear first time.

25 mins: Dodgy clearance by Boruc puts his defence under pressure but Oxlade-Chamberlain can't take advantage.

23 mins: Saints have had 57 percent of the ball so far but Szczesny's yet to be tested.

20 mins: Wilshere's 21 today and it handed a lovely birthday present by Ramirez - a knee in the knackers. It's accidental as they go for a 50/50 ball, but he'll be singing soprano for the rest of the half.

18 mins: Guly curls in a cross from the right but the Gunners clear.

16 mins: Lambert has a crack from 25 yards but it's blocked and cleared. Saints enjoying a good spell of pressure at the mo, even if Szczesny's not having much to do.

Sam, Manchester: "i think the score would be 4 -0 to arsenal"

13 mins: Podolski's played in by Cazorla but the ball gets stuck under him under pressure and he can't get a shot in. Both sides have started at a fair old lick!

11 mins: Ramirez breaks and tries to feed Lambert but there's groans as his through ball is cut out.

9 mins: Saints win a corner on the left but it's cleared first time. They're straight back at Arsenal though and are screaming for a penalty after Vermaelen kicks Yoshida where Father Ted kicked Bishop Brennan. Nothing doing though, says ref Probert.

7 mins: Another simple catch is spilt by Boruc! The Gunners then win another corner but he makes this one stick - cue the ubiquitous ironic cheers.

Twiggy, Ross on Wye: "The gorgeous Poldolski 1st goal and the moderate arsenal 3-1."

5 mins: Cazorla has a shy from 30 yards which takes a deflection and drops just wide for a corner. Boruc has been handed the gloves today and lets the ball from the right slip through them but the Saints manage to clear.

4 mins: Accidental clash of heads between Davis and Sagna as they go for a header but they're fine to carry on.

2 mins: Confident possession by Arsenal as you'd expect in the early stages, but 17-year-old Shaw gets a good foot in to stop Oxlade-Chamberlain as he bids to get into the right of the box.

Kazim, Mumbai: "Arteta to score today Arsenal to 2-1"

0 mins: The Gunners get us under way playing left to right in their purple and black away strip. Most of you are tipping them for an easy win and I have to agree. I've actually just stuck a quid on 0-5 at 80/1, worth it at those odds!

1705: Evening all - happy new year and all that - and welcome to Orange's live commentary on the late Premier League clash at St Mary's. Arsene Wenger keeps the same Arsenal side from the 7-3 win over Newcastle as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott face their old team. There are three changes for the Saints from their 3-3 draw with Stoke as Artur Boruc replaces Kelvin Davis in goal, Gaston Ramirez comes in for Jay Rodriguez and Steven Davis replaces Jos Hooiveld. I'll bring you live commentary from 1730, but in the mean time use the box on the right to send in your predictions, bets, new year's resolutions and anything else that's on your mind.

Chris, Exeter: "Saints need 2 roll back yrs & re-sign Mick Channon 2 win 2nite!"

Matt, Northampton: "Could be major upset on the cards southampton 2 arsenal 1 get on."

Brett, Kent: "arsenal will b to strong for southampton 0-4, walcott, ox, podolski and gibbs"

match report

Theo Walcott was unable to inspire Arsenal to victory on his return to Southampton on New Year's Day as they had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

The England international made his first appearance at St Mary's since leaving in 2006 but he, and fellow former Saint Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, had to make do with a point.

Southampton, now out of the relegation zone, took a deserved lead in the first half through Gaston Ramirez and matched their visitors for most of the contest.

But Arsene Wenger's frustrated Arsenal, who dropped points in the race for the UEFA Champions League, levelled before half-time when Brazilian forward Guly turned Walcott's free-kick into his own goal.

Much of the build-up to Tuesday's game surrounded graduates of Southampton's fabled Academy.

Both Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain started at the place they once called home, while speculation was rife that Luke Shaw, the latest star off the production line, could soon follow them to Emirates Stadium.

Clear-cut opportunities were in short supply in the first half and the opening goal came in the 34th minute thanks to shambolic defending rather than any moment of genius.

Arsenal failed on a number of occasions to clear the ball and, after seeing a shot blocked, Jason Puncheon pulled back for Ramirez to fire home just inside the 18-yard box.

The lead lasted just seven minutes, though, as Puncheon gave away a free-kick wide on the left.

Walcott swung it in and Guly directed past his own goalkeeper at the near post to send the 3,141 visiting fans into raptures.

Arsenal thought they had a second before the break as Walcott found a way past Artur Boruc, only for it to be chalked off for offside.

The home side responded well when the teams re-emerged for the second half, with a Rickie Lambert header across the six yard box just evading his team-mates.

Both managers made changes in a bid to find a winner, with Mikel Arteta coming close with a fierce 25-yard strike.

Wojciech Szczesny parried a late Puncheon strike and Maya Yoshida cleared a later cross as the match ended level, propelling Saints out of the drop zone.
