90 mins:FULL TIME: NORWICH 0-0 NEWCASTLE

89 mins:Holt sends a free header straight across the face of goal. What a chance, right at the death!

89 mins:Norwich win a corner and Bennett sprints over to take it. It's another low, poor corner from the home side, and Newcastle easily clear the ball. That set piece sums up the lack of quality and consistency that has plagued this game.

89 mins:The crowd are trying to lift the Norwich players; the fans certainly haven't settled for a draw. They want all three points against a very poor Newcastle side!

87 mins:A free kick from Cabaye is disappointing, the ball failing to beat the first man in the form of Martin.

85 mins:You just get the feeling that both sides might just have settled for a draw here at this late stage.

82 mins:Gael Bigirimana comes on for Anita.

82 mins:Mathieu Debuchy brings down Pilkington and picks up a yellow card on his debut.

81 mins:Holt and Tettey combine well in midfield, but the striker is dropping far too deep at the moment to be effective.

79 mins:Newcastle win a corner after a neat attacking move. It's taken by Marveaux deep towards the back post, but Turner heads clear. Coloccini picks up the loose ball and shoots on the volley, but Bunn makes an easy save.

77 mins:Bennett sends a cross towards the back post, but Newcastle have enough men back to clear the danger.

75 mins:Elliott Bennett comes on for Snodgrass.

75 mins:Pilkington forces a great save from Krul from three yards out after connecting with a ball across the face of goal from Snodgrass.

75 mins:Cabaye chips the ball towards the back post where Cisse is lurking, but Martin does well to head clear for the Canaries.

73 mins:Cabaye tries a little trick to keep hold of possession in a tight spot, but only confuses himself and gives the ball away. Cabaye has been poor since coming on, for a player of his quality.

71 mins:The home fans are roaring the Norwich players on now; clearly they believe the game is here for the taking as the minutes tick down to the final whistle.

69 mins:Norwich already look more threatening with Holt on the pitch. Can he inspire his side to a win here in these final 20 minutes or so?

67 mins:That's better from Norwich! Russell Martin takes advantage of Newcastle's lack of organisation, and slams an effort against the post. Krul was beaten there, with only the upright preventing Norwich from taking the lead.

66 mins:Holt comes on for Jackson.

66 mins:Cisse picks out the run of Marveaux, and the Newcastle man tries to shift the ball onto his other foot, almost scared to take on the shot. Three Norwich players take advantage of his indecision to crowd him out, and that's very poor from Marveaux.

64 mins:Marveaux gets away from Johnson and slams an effort at goal. It isn't a bad attempt, but the ball rises from the moment it leaves his foot.

62 mins:Surely it won't be long before Holt is brought on for Norwich. Why not take a gamble, with the game going in the manner it is?

60 mins:Michael Williamson plays the ball out wide to Cabaye, but the Newcastle man simply plays the ball straight back, forcing Williamson to run towards the Magpies goal to retrieve possession. That's very, very sloppy from the away side.

58 mins:That's a clever substitution from Alan Pardew. Cabaye will put in a shift going forward, but should also help out with Newcastle's defensive efforts.

56 mins:Yohan Cabaye comes on for Obertan.

55 mins:The opening ten minutes of this half have been very scrappy, but Norwich are in the ascendancy here. At the moment Newcastle are lacking in ideas and inspiration.

53 mins:Alexander Tettey slides the ball down the channel and nearly picks out Snodgrass. Santon, as he has been for much of the afternoon, is on hand to thump the ball clear.

51 mins:Norwich are dominating the possession here, as they did for big chunks of the first half. Newcastle are keeping their shape fairly well, though, making it hard for Norwich to break them down.

49 mins:Norwich seem to have emerged from the tunnel with renewed purpose here; Hoolahan and Snodgrass in particular look like two men on a mission.

47 mins:Bradley Johnson should score! Hoolahan pulls the ball back towards Johnson, but Obertan nips in just as he's about to pull the trigger, and taps the ball out for a corner.

45 mins:The second half is now underway.

45 mins:HALF TIME: NORWICH 0-0 NEWCASTLE

43 mins:Sylvain Marveaux chips the ball into the box and Cisse and Obertan get in a real tangle in the area, utterly wasting the promising attacking move from the Magpies.

41 mins:This game is crying out for somebody to do something just a little bit special. That sort of creativity isn't coming from the players on the pitch, so it might have to come from the sub's bench.

39 mins:The atmosphere here is very flat at the moment, and much of that has to do with the slow pace of Norwich's play. The fans aren't used to this style of play, particularly at home.

37 mins:It's worth noting that the set pieces today, on the whole, have been absolutely horrendous from both sides. Norwich have scored more direct free kicks than any other Premier League side, but today they're certainly not on top form.

35 mins:Both managers might opt to make a switch in personnel at half time. Newcastle and Norwich could do with more options up front, but perhaps especially the home side. Grant Holt is on the bench today, we should remember.

33 mins:Norwich concede a free kick in a dangerous position 25 yards from goal. Anita swings the ball into the box and Michael Turner is forced into a last-ditch clearance before anyone in a black and white shirt can pounce.

31 mins:Snodgrass, after a brilliant run forward, tries to lay the ball off to Hoolahan, but it's a poor pass, and Newcastle can clear. That is so typical of how Norwich have played so far this afternoon.

29 mins:Perch tries to thread the ball through to where Cisse is making a clever run, but he just puts too much pace on the pass. That was a really nice idea from Perch, playing out of position today but seeing plenty of the ball.

27 mins:Hoolahan crosses towards the back post, where Snodgrass is lurking with intent. He gets his head to the ball, but can't quite get enough power behind his attempt.

25 mins:Newcastle are enjoying far more of the possession now than they were in the opening 15 minutes, and it's just starting to make Norwich look a little anxious. Certainly the home fans aren't enjoying this one as much as they perhaps thought they would.

23 mins:Cisse forces a straightforward save from Bunn with a first-time shot from the edge of the box.

21 mins:A break forward from Norwich ends in disappointment after a poor touch from Hoolahan, which allows James Perch to sprint back to defend for his team. Norwich had three men against two there, after the Magpies committed far too many players forward.

19 mins:Jackson scoops a very poor shot over Tim Krul's crossbar. It's a strange old game this one; Newcastle aren't playing well, but when they do work their way into the final third, they look far more clinical than the Canaries in front of goal.

17 mins:Bunn makes a smart save from Obertan, who turns and shoots in the blink of an eye from just inside the box. He managed to get a lot of power on the turn there.

16 mins:There are reports emerging today that a side in Argentina are keen to sign the unsettled Coloccini. With all their struggles in recent weeks, losing their captain is surely the last thing the Magpies need. They look today as if they need all the leadership they can get.

14 mins:Wes Hoolahan chips the ball into the box with his left foot, but there aren't enough yellow jerseys in the area to provide a real attacking threat, allowing the away side to clear.

12 mins:Jonas Gutierrez plays the ball across the face of goal after a stunning run down the left wing and Papiss Cisse comes within an inch or two of slotting the ball home. That was positive from Newcastle.

11 mins:Anthony Pilkington crosses into the box and Simeon Jackson almost gets his head to the ball, but Davide Santon is on hand to clear the danger.

9 mins:The impression you get from these opening minutes is that there may not be a glut of goals here today at Carrow Road!

7 mins:Newcastle really don't look at all confident today, unsurprisingly given their recent run of form, but they have to bring that run to an end at some point.

5 mins:Robert Snodgrass takes a free kick for Norwich, but Fabricio Coloccini is alert to thump the ball clear.

3 mins:Both midfields are absolutely packed this afternoon. Norwich and Newcastle are only playing one up front, which means it's very congested in the middle of the park.

1 mins:Gabriel Obertan sends an early ball into the box and forces Mark Bunn to rush off his line to pluck the ball out of the air. That's good early pressure from the Magpies.

The referee blows his whistle and we're underway at Carrow Road.

After their shock FA Cup defeat at Brighton, Newcastle and Alan Pardew could do with a reaction today away from home at Norwich. Unfortunately for the Magpies, the stats aren't in their favour. Eight of the last nine meetings between these two have ended in home wins; the other was a draw. With Norwich also on a downward spiral, both teams need a result today, providing this fixture with all the ingredients of a classic Premier League clash.

match report

Norwich and Newcastle ended their losing runs by picking up a point apiece from a boring goalless draw at Carrow Road.

The closest either side came to a goal was when Russell Martin saw his long-range effort come back off the post midway through the second half.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will be happier with the draw after seeing his side lose their last four games in all competitions, while the stalemate also ends a run of four straight Premier League defeats for Norwich.

Fabricio Coloccini started for Newcastle despite widespread speculation over his future and he was rarely tested in the 90 minutes.

Chances were few and far between in a tepid opening half with both sides showing why they are in such poor form.

The only noteworthy effort of the half came in the 18th minute when the ball fell to Gabriel Obertan inside the box and he fired in a snap-shot which was well kept out by Mark Bunn.

Norwich enjoyed some fine approach play in midfield involving Wes Hoolahan and Anthony Pilkington, but all too often their final pass let them down in the last third.

The second half continued in much the same pattern of the first half as both sides struggled to impose themselves in the game.

In a rare moment of excitement Martin picked the ball up fully 30 yards from goal and fired in a volley which came back off the post with Tim Krul beaten in the Newcastle goal.

Krul came to Newcastle's rescue 15 minutes from time when he produced a fine save to keep out Pilkington's close-range effort.

The only bonus for Newcastle was the return to action for Yohan Cabaye after a lengthy spell on the sidelines through injury.

Norwich almost grabbed a winner in the final chance of the game when Grant Holt rose highest to meet fellow substitute Elliott Bennett's cross and his header across the face of goal was just missed by Pilkington at the far post.
