live commentary

FULL-TIME:Van Persie looked like he'd won it for United with his first-half header, but Dempsey salvaged a point for Spurs in injury time. His last-gasp goal will have been celebrated by the blue half of Manchester with the gap at the top now five points. Thanks for following our coverage. Scroll down to see how it all unfolded.

90+3 mins: SPURS SNATCH A POINT!Dramatic end to the game at White Hart Lane! Assou-Ekotto chips a hopeful cross into the mixer. De Gea's punch comes out to Lennon, who finds DEMPSEY in the six-yard box and the American strokes the ball home.

90 mins:Lloris races out of his goal to clear a long ball which was being chased down by Welbeck. Three minutes added on.

88 mins:Bale tries to flick the ball through to Defoe but he's tackled by Ferdinand, who has had a superb game. The snow is lashing down now - heavier than it has been all afternoon. Too late to call it off now, I reckon. Could you imagine Fergie's reaction?!

86 mins:Bale cuts inside from the left and pings in a shot with his right foot which deflects just wide off Vidic. Spurs continue to knock on the door but they're running out of time.

83 mins:Decent spell of possession for United as they keep the ball away from their goal and force a corner at the opposite end.

81 mins:Defoe has another sight on goal - this time from 20 yards - but he hammers his strike straight at De Gea.

80 mins:Parker is being replaced by Huddlestone in the Spurs midfield.

79 mins:Lennon has burst back into life and is fouled by Rooney, who is shown a yellow card.

78 mins:Big chance for Defoe! Lennon spins away superbly from Evra and plays Defoe in on goal, but just as he pulls the trigger, Ferdinand slides across and makes a crucial block. Fantastic defending.

77 mins:Rafael has his name taken by the referee as Spurs win a free-kick. It comes out wide to Lennon, who twists past Carrick and sends in a cross, but Defoe can't get hold of his volley.

75 mins:Second sub for United as Valencia replaces Cleverley.

73 mins:A frustrated Bale fires in a shot from long range but his effort lands well off target. Tony from Barnstaple says, "RVP should be called OMT as in one man team!"

70 mins:Bale takes a tumble - over the advertising board as he falls backwards into the crowd before being helped up by Cleverley. Nick from Bacup says, "I was expecting Lennon to do more against Evra, but that's what I always do with him, I expect more!" Lennon had an excellent first half but he has gone off the boil since the break.

67 mins:Another chance for Dempsey. Defoe's shot inside the area is blocked by Ferdinand. The ball breaks loose to Dempsey, but he fires his effort into the side netting.

65 mins:Villas-Boas now makes his first change as he brings Assou-Ekotto on for Naughton.

63 mins:Rooney is instantly involved as he goes down inside the Spurs box under a challenge from Caulker. Rooney's convinced it should be a penalty but Foy disagrees. Spurs have got away with one because Rooney was definitely clipped.

62 mins:Bale swings a superb ball across the six-yard box but there's no white shirt on the end of it. Fergie makes his first sub as Rooney replaces Kagawa.

61 mins:Dempsey tries his luck from 25 yards after the ball falls kindly to the Spurs forward, but his tame shot is easily saved by De Gea.

58 mins:Spurs are pressing for an equaliser. Lennon tries to dance past Carrick on the byline, but the former Tottenham man blocks his path and wins United a goal kick.

54 mins:Kagawa has his hand on Parker's shoulder on the edge of the United area. The Spurs midfielder goes down but referee Chris Foy doesn't think the contact warrants a free-kick.

52 mins:End-to-end action now as Welbeck races down the left wing and cuts the ball back to Kagawa, but the midfielder drags his attempt way off target from 20 yards.

51 mins:Stunning save by De Gea! Dempsey receives a pass inside the area from Dembele and jinks past Evra. With only the keeper to beat from six yards out, Dempsey should score, but De Gea manages to turn the American's shot behind with his outstretched leg.

49 mins:A long ball into the United box is headed out by Ferdinand to Bale, who fires an ambitious shot with the outside of his favoured left foot just over the bar. Open start to the half.

47 mins:Kagawa tees up a shooting chance for Welbeck inside the Spurs area but Dawson charges him down to clear the danger.

46 mins:Half-chance foe Defoe inside the opening minute of the half, but the striker slams his low shot a few feet wide from the edge of the area.

46 mins:The snow is relentless in the capital as United get us back underway.

HALF-TIME:United lead at a snowy White Hart Lane and it's a familiar name on the scoresheet. Spurs made a decent start with Lennon a menace down their right, but Van Persie headed the visitors ahead after turning in Cleverley's cross on 25 minutes. Join us for the second half soon.

45 mins:Scare for Tottenham at the end of this half as Welbeck nips past Caulker on the byline. Fortunately for the home side, the angle is against the United attacker and Lloris turns the ball behind. Two minutes added on.

43 mins:Not for the first time, Evra is forced to foul the dangerous Lennon and receives a yellow card.

40 mins:Bale denied by De Gea! This time Spurs do create something as Rafael's header lands at Bale's feet on the edge of the box. The Welshman strikes the ball on the half-volley with his weaker right peg, but De Gea blocks with his legs.

37 mins:We've hit a bit of a lull with Spurs struggling to create opportunities. Welbeck tries to get on the end of a Van Persie through ball, but a quick Caulker comes across to cover.

33 mins:Walker plays a dangerous backpass to Lloris as the ball skids off the turf, but the Spurs keeper manages to hack it clear.

30 mins:Dawson is shown a yellow card after catching Evra with a late challenge.

27 mins:Defoe almost catches out De Gea with snap-shot on the angle, but the United keeper gets down to push the ball behind at his near post. Sharp save because Defoe was shaping to cross.

25 mins: RVP HEADS UNITED IN FRONT!United have been second best so far but they take the lead thanks to a former Gunner. Cleverley stands up a cross to the far post and a lurking VAN PERSIE powers his header past Lloris. It's the Dutchman's 18th Premier League goal of the season. I wonder if Arsenal fans cheered that?

23 mins:Spurs force a corner but Ferdinand scrambles it away. Taylor in Cornwall says, "Welbeck must have bought Fergie a lovely Christmas present. Why else would a average player start ahead of Hernandez?"

21 mins:Former Sours midfielder Carrick is booked on his return to the Lane after a late sliding tackle on Dempsey.

17 mins:Spurs have enjoyed the brighter start with Lennon causing Evra early problems. United haven't yet warmed themselves up. Vidic is in the wars after heading the back of Defoe's skull, but the United defender soon returns to his feet.

14 mins:The lively Lennon makes another burst forward as he darts towards the United box and unleashes a low left-footed shot which De Gea palms out after diving low to his left. The keeper also saves Defoe's rebound, but the Spurs striker was offside.

13 mins:Van Persie has United's first effort on goal, but his header from a Jones cross flies straight at Lloris.

11 mins:Parker, who is still seeking his first Spurs goal, gets a bit of luck as his intercepted pass comes back out to him before the midfielder shoots wide from 25 yards.

9 mins:Spurs are starting to come out of their shell. Lennon whizzes past Evra down the right before being tripped by the Frenchman. Free-kick to the home side but Vidic again gets his head in the way as United clear.

6 mins:A Spurs free-kick is half-cleared out to Dempsey on the edge of the box. He meets the ball sweetly on the volley but his strike smacks Vidic in the head. He could have been killed.

4 mins:Slow start to the game. Lloris is struggling with his kicking - twice already he's punted the ball straight out for a throw. Dan from Stoke predicts "Jones to notch in a narrow United victory."

0 mins:Spurs get us underway at a frosty White Hart Lane. Fergie is wearing a beanie hat as he takes his place in the visiting dugout.

1556:It's pelting it down with snow in North London. First bad pun of the afternoon belongs to Phil from Warrington, who says, "Come on Man Utd snow what you have to do 3-1." The teams are out on the pitch.

1525:Parker makes his first Premier League start of the season for Spurs as he replaces the injured Sandro. Dempsey and Caulker also come into the side for Vertonghen and Adebayor, who is on Africa Cup of Nations duty. Manchester United make wholesale changes from their FA Cup win over West Ham. Only Rafael and Jones, who is set to play in midfield, retain their places in the XI. Van Persie and Welbeck are among those recalled as Rooney drops to the bench.

1500:GAME ON! This afternoon's clash at White Hart Lane, which was in danger of being postponed because of heavy snowfall in the capital, has just passed a pitch inspection. Team news to follow.

match report

Clint Dempsey snatched a late equaliser in the snow to earn Tottenham a 1-1 draw against Manchester United.

Robin van Persie had looked to have claimed all three points with his first-half header at White Hart Lane on Sunday but Dempsey swept the ball home in stoppage time to salvage a point.

The adverse weather conditions had threatened to see the Premier League clash at White Hart Lane called off - and Spurs fans were soon left wishing it had.

After a cautious start in which Aaron Lennon forced a save from David de Gea, it was ex-Arsenal man Van Persie who opened the scoring by heading home Tom Cleverley's right-wing cross.

It was the culmination of a flowing move from the Red Devils after good work from Michael Carrick, Shinji Kagawa and Danny Welbeck, who was selected ahead of Wayne Rooney in attack.

The home side struggled to create outright chances until De Gea produced a superb reaction stop with his legs to deny Gareth Bale's deflected effort from the edge of the box just before the break.

And De Gea was called into action once again after the interval when he came up with a reflex save to keep out the advancing Dempsey from point-blank range.

The Spanish goalkeeper then pushed away another Dempsey shot shortly afterwards as Spurs pushed hard for an equaliser and the crowd got behind their team.

But United remained a threat on the break and Rooney had a strong shout for a penalty shortly after replacing Kagawa when he went down under a challenge from Steven Caulker.

It was still Andre Villas-Boas' side asking most of the questions and it required a last-ditch block from Rio Ferdinand to prevent Jermain Defoe levelling things up after getting away in the channel.

But just when Sir Alex Ferguson's team looked to have held on for the win, De Gea could only punch a cross as far as Lennon inside the area and he returned the ball to Dempsey to stun United.
