Julian Schieber notched the winner for Borussia Dortmund as Manchester City finished bottom of UEFA Champions League Group D. Roberto Mancini's men needed to win to have any chance of qualifying for the Europa League in third place in the group but could find no way through in Germany.
In a goalless first period of few chances, Edin Dzeko had the best City effort but saw his shot from 25 yards saved by Roman Weidenfeller diving low to his right. At the other end, Joe Hart made good saves to his left to deny first Marco Reus and then Ivan Perisic. In the second half, Dzeko headed straight at the keeper with a close range effort soon after kick-off. Mats Hummels just failed to convert a free-kick from Marcel Schmelzer before Hart had to push over a Perisic volley and save to his right to deny Kevin Grosskreutz.
The hosts deservedly went in front on 57 minutes when Schieber slotted home from six yards after a fantastic cross from substitute Jakub Blaszczykowski. Soon afterwards, Schieber was played through on goal and he tried to chip the on-rushing Hart but the City keeper caught the ball.
Mancini threw on Sergio Aguero and Mario Balotelli in search of the two goals now needed but it was Hart who had to make another great save to deny substitute Robert Lewandowski from close range. Aguero tried an effort which Weidenfeller saved before the Argentinean played Balotelli in on goal but he was given offside and saw his shot saved.
Balotelli was booked in injury time for throwing the ball to the ground in frustration which summed up a miserable night for City. The English champions tamely dropped out of Europe without notching a win in the group. In time, they may find the lack of European action assists them in their title defence, but they must get the disappointment out of the system quickly before Sunday's derby against Manchester United.
FULL-TIME: Manchester City are out of Europe altogether after failing to win a single Champions League group game this season. All attention can now turn to the Manchester derby at the weekend that will be a trillion times better than what we've had to witness tonight. Thanks for joining Orange's live coverage. A full-match report follows shortly.
90+2 mins: Balotelli gets booked for throwing the ball down in frustration after being penalised. Oh Mario.
90 mins: Three more minutes of Champions League football left for Man City this season.
86 mins: Dortmund do us all a favour by winding down the clock with another sub. Kirch is coming off for Bittencourt.
84 mins: Aguero has been quiet since coming on but nearly hauls City level after finding a little space down the left. He lets rip from inside the area but Weidenfeller makes the save with his knees.
82 mins: Lewandowski races clear and only Hart's face stops Manchester City's Champions League campaign from getting even more embarrassing.
80 mins: Maicon's clearance only goes as far as Leitner who curls it way beyond the top right-hand corner. We're nearly there folks.
77 mins: On comes Lewandowski for a brief cameo role. He replaces the goalscorer Schieber.
76 mins: Leitner has a great chance to double Dortmund's lead but he makes a disappointing connection to Blaszczykowski's low cross.
74 mins: Man City ponder forward down the right where Balotelli meets a cross from the right awkwardly with his head. These Dortmund fans don't like Mario! The boos are deafening!
70 mins: Blaszczykowski tries to cause havoc down the right wing again but Barry gets a vital foot in inside his own penalty area.
68 mins: Last change for Man City then as Zabaleta comes off for Nasri.
66 mins: Tevez, with his bulldog-like approach (one for the Fifa lovers out there), barges his way through on goal and stabs a hopeful effort straight at Weidenfeller.
64 mins: Boos and whistles as Balotelli comes on to replace Dzeko. His celebrations at Euro 2012 still fresh in German minds.
59 mins: Schieber's in on goal again just seconds after scoring but his cheeky lob does not fool Hart.
57 MINS: DORTMUND TAKE THE LEAD!Would you believe it?! Blaszczkowski is the architect as he makes Nastasic look with superb chest control and a drizzle. Then, he plays a in a glorious cross in between defenders for SCHIEBER to tap in!
55 mins:Man City try to respond but the ball goes out for a goal-kick before Barry crosses. That brings the first City sub with the ineffective Sinclair coming off for Aguero.
53 mins: Perisic fires a sweet left-footed volley towards goal which Hart tips over the bar. From the resulting corner, Hart is called into action once again with a firm right hand to deny Grosskreutz.
49 mins: Great chance for Dortmund to take the lead. Schmelzer plays a lovely ball in from a free-kick on the right and a sliding Hummels can only get a big toe on it.
47 mins: Nasri's cross finds Dzeko who heads straight at Weidenfeller from five yards out. Hmmm.
45 mins: To make things even better Borussia Dortmund are bringing on every commentator's nightmare Blaszczykowski for Reus. A dreamy half-shift for a couple of Dortmund's star players.
HALF-TIME: You'll not be surprised to here that it's been a bit of dull game so far at the Westfalenstadion. It's almost as if Borussia Dortmund have already qualifed for the next round and Manchester City don't want Europa League football. If you're feeling brave, join me again in 15 minutes for the second half. Even if it's just for moral support.
44 mins: Man City win a corner after Santana clears behind. Dzeko can only guide his header over at the far post.
42 mins: Dortmund look to nick a goal just before half-time but Perisic's attempted cross-field ball for the Schieber is overhit. Perisic then has a go moments later but Hart easily saves.
39 mins: And we flick into pre-season mode again with both sides passing the ball around under no real pressure.
35 mins: Reus overtakes Nastasic with worrying ease and his ferocious strike from 16 yards goes flying past Hart's left post. Dortmund's best chance of the night by far.
32 mins: Dzeko tries to catch Weidenfeller out with a shot that looks to be dipping into the bottom-left corner. The German keeper is alert though and pushes the ball away.
30 mins: A harsh yellow card for Javi Garcia after he slightly nudges Perisic over. The yellow means that he will miss Manchester City's next European match whenever that may be.
27 mins: Reus and Leitner exchange quick passes around the City area before the latter nearly produces the perfect cross for Schieber.
23 mins: City stroke the ball around nicely until Nasri plays a beautifully-weighted pass through to Dzeko. The Bosnian's low cross from the left needs turning behind Schmelzer as there are lurking blue shirts waiting to tap in.
20 mins: Reus wakes the home fans up with a lovely run down the centre. He shows too much of the ball to Lescott though and the move breaks down.
17 mins: Nasri tries to slip Tevez in on goal but Schmelzer comes over to cover for the already-qualified Dortmund.
14 mins: Martin Tyler has played his Kate's pregnancy card already. I wasn't expecting that to appear until at least the second-half. I hope he realises he can't use that again now.
11 mins: A sluggish clearance from Sinclair allows Kirch to have a dig from just outside the area which Hart manages to hold.
9 mins: Dortmund half-heartedly venture in the opposition half and get as far as 25 yards out before City win the ball back again.
Peter, Belfast -"im a big utd fan but i am really suprised city didnt make group stages money doesnt always guarantee success im looking forward to derby on sunday and hoping for a bit of revenge"
6 mins: There's not an awful lot happening at the moment. Something I'll be typing quite a bit tonight I suspect.
3 mins: Barry whips in an early free-kick on the right which is flicked behind by a Borussia Dortmund head. The resulting corner is dealt with.
0 mins: We're underway at the Westfalenstadion, where Europa League dreams can come true tonight for Man City. These 90 minutes are going to go very, very slowly aren't they? That wasn't a rhetorical question by the way. Please don't leave me all alone to watch this. Thanks.
Hello and welcome to Orange's live coverage of Manchester City's final Champions League group game as they face Borussia Dortmund away.
Manchester City make three changes from the side that drew to Everton at the weekend. Matija Nastasic comes into the back four with Javi Garcia replacing the injured David Silva in midfield.
The Spaniard could also be doubtful for Sunday's derby against Manchester United in the Barclays Premier League.
There is a very rare start for summer signing Scott Sinclair who starts in attack alongside Edin Dzeko and Carlos Tevez.
Orange commentator Mark Scott will be bringing you live updates from 1945. You send him your suggestions as to how Man City are going to try and lose this game so they can avoid the Europa League by using the text box above.
