FULL-TIME: REAL DUMP OUT UNITED!Manchester United's Champions League journey ends in the last 16 after a controversial defeat to Real Madrid. United were 2-1 ahead on aggregate after Ramos scored at the wrong end early in the second half. But the tie turned when Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir showed Nani a straight red card for a high boot on Arbeloa. Within 15 minutes of that decision, Madrid bagged two goals through substitute Modric and the returning Ronaldo to send United packing and Real into the quarter-finals. Thanks for following our coverage. Scroll down to how the drama unfolded.

90+3 mins:Another brilliant save by Lopez as he dives to his left to palm away Vidic's header from a corner. United are then denied a penalty by the referee after Ramos brings down Evra inside the box. This ref is going to get lynched by the United fans at the end of this game!

90 mins:Lopez goes down after a collision with Van Persie but there's nothing wrong with him. He's soon back on his feet after a visit from the physio. When play restarts, Ronaldo forces De Gea into a low save. Five minutes added on.

89 mins:Madrid hit the woodwork! Kaka glides down the left and cuts into the box before smashing a shot against the post. The ball deflects off the back of De Gea but he dives on it before it crosses the line.

88 mins:Fergie makes his final sub as he brings Anderson on for Rafael. Pepe picks up a yellow card - no surprise there.

86 mins:Ronaldo runs at his former team-mates as Madrid look to hammer the final nail in United's coffin, but his low shot is well held by De Gea.

84 mins:United are throwing everything at their opponents. Van Persie breaks through but is denied by a sprawling Lopez before Rooney volleys the loose ball over. Great response. They're certainly not throwing in the towel.

82 mins:Excellent save by Lopez as he claws away Carrick's header from a short United corner.

81 mins:Welbeck is being replaced by Young.

80 mins:United's fans appeal for handball after Ramos blocks Welbeck's shot inside the area, but even if the Spaniard had picked it up and ran up the other end the referee wouldn't have given it. Rafael then blasts the rebound over.

77 mins:United are pressing forward as they bid to set up a grandstand finish but they're struggling to break through Madrid's defence. Modric almost catches them on a counter but shoots straight at De Gea.

74 mins:Rooney is sent on by Fergie after surprisingly starting the game from the bench. Not sure he can do much to change events. Cleverley makes way. Kaka is shown a yellow card for a foul on Rafael.

73 mins:Carrick is shown a yellow card for dissent before Welbeck's tame header from a corner is collected by Lopez.

71 mins:What a blow for United, who were in control of this tie before Nani was wrongly sent off. No doubt that was the turning point. Pepe replaces Ozil for the visitors.

69 mins: RONALDO RETURNS TO HAUNT UNITED!Who else? Madrid have turned this tie completely around after two goals in the space of three minutes. Higuain drills the ball across the face of goal and Ronaldo arrives at the far post ahead of Rafael to tuck in his 40th goal of the season. He shows United's fans respect by refusing to celebrate but that has surely knocked his former club out of the Champions League. Unless United can score two goals with 10 men...

66 mins: MODRIC LEVELS THE TIE!What a hit this is by the former Tottenham man. He's been on the pitch less than 10 minutes but finds some space and fires a rocket off the inside of the post from 25 yards. Now the tide has turned.

63 mins:Van Persie tests Lopez with a long-range shot on the break but the keeper smothers the ball.

61 mins:Madrid are piling on the pressure now as they look to try and take advantage of the extra man. Higuain sends a header goalwards from close range after connecting with Modric's corner, but it's blocked by Rafael on the line! It may have hit the Brazilian on the arm, although I'm not sure if it was deliberate.

58 mins:Everybody is still stunned by Nani's red card. Fergie is trying to create more noise as he orchestrates the crowd. Real make a sub a Arbeloa is replaced by former Spurs midfielder Modric.

56 mins: NANI SENT OFF!Shocking decision from the referee as he shows Nani a straight red card! The Portuguese winger catches Arbeloa in the stomach with a high boot but his eyes were on the ball. It was a foul and at the very most a yellow card, but never, not in a million years, was that a red. Fergie is absolutely fuming. Cuneyt Cakir has completely changed the complexion of this tie.

53 mins:Higuain flashes a teasing ball across the face of United's six-yard box but there's no green shirt in sight and United clear.

50 mins:Not much has changed from Real's perspective as a goalless draw wouldn't have been enough for them to go through anyway. But that goal obviously gives United a big advantage. It's going to be a long 40-odd minutes for Fergie. Too soon to check his watch?

48 mins: UNITED GIFTED THE LEAD!Old Trafford erupts! What a start to the half. Welbeck gets in behind the Real defence but is tackled just as he's about to pull the trigger. The ball breaks to Van Persie, whose goalbound shot is blocked by Arbeloa, but still the danger isn't cleared. Varane dwells on the ball and Nani pinches it, firing in a low cross which RAMOS stabs past his own keeper from six yards.

46 mins:Play restarts bang on time as United get this evenly-poised tie back underway. No subs for the start of this half. Ghetly from Bombay says, "Man U not gonna lose but they are gonna go out on away goals. 2-2 draw at Old Trafford."

HALF-TIME:Fascinating first half at Old Trafford, which United have shaded. The home side have created the better chances and kept the returning and revered Ronaldo quiet. Vidic almost broke the deadlock but saw his header come crashing off the post, before Welbeck failed to convert the rebound from a few yards out, although he may have been flagged offside had he scored. As things stand, United are heading through on away goals. But it can't finish in a stalemate, can it? Join us for the second half soon.

45 mins:Kaka is now on in place of the injured Di Maria. Ronaldo tries his luck from 25 yards but shoots well wide. He's had a quiet half. One minute added on.

41 mins:Di Maria is holding his hamstring and it appears his night is over as he receives treatment. Kaka is warming up.

38 mins:Arbeloa loses possession to Evra after a trampoline first touch inside the United half, and the former Liverpool man rakes his studs across the Frenchman's knee when trying to win it back. Nasty tackle and he deservedly gets booked.

36 mins:United's fans appeal for a penalty after Rafael takes a tumble inside the box from a Ramos challenge, but the Brazilian right-back was simply outmuscled by his opponent.

34 mins:Double chance for United! Van Persie rolls past Varane and unleashes a shot on goal from inside the box. An unconvincing Lopez parries it straight into the path of Welbeck, but his follow-up is deflected over by the Madrid keeper. That's two great chances Welbeck has spurned now.

33 mins:Higuain breaks free of United's defence down the left, but he's quickly closed down by an alert De Gea. A Madrid corner is then turned in from close range by Higuain, but only after the referee had penalised Ramos for a foul on Van Persie as the defender headed the ball goalwards.

30 mins:Real are now throwing men forward as Arbeloa's low cross finds Higuan inside the box. The striker turns and tried to help the ball on but Carrick makes a crucial clearance.

28 mins:Khedira picks out Ronaldo with a clever ball over the top. There's a hint of offside but Ronny is given the benefit of the doubt before his shot is charged down by Vidic.

25 mins:United are enjoying the better of the game now. Van Persie peels off his marker from a corner, but fails to connect with the set-piece as he attempts a speculative overhead kick.

22 mins:Looking at the replays of that gilt-edged chance, Welbeck was in an offside position but the flag didn't go up. Iirreverent now, though, as he didn't score.

21 mins:How have United not scored?! Vidic meets a Giggs corner and plants a powerful header past a diving Lopez but against the base of the post. The ball bounces towards Welbeck, who is only a few yards out with the goal gaping, but he shins it straight to a grateful Lopez, who clutches the ball on the line. The rebound came at Welbeck quickly but he should have buried it.

18 mins:Nani outsprints Varane down United's left and earns a corner after his cross deflects behind. However, Nani's set-piece is cleared at the near post and Real break before Evra pulls back Di Maria on the halfway line. Yellow card for the Frenchman.

15 mins:Decent spell now for United. Coentrao heads a Nani cross behind before the home side threaten down the right after Welbeck breaks clear. He's held up before Giggs delivers a lovely ball towards the back post with the outside of his left boot. Van Persie meets it on the volley, but his scuffed shot deflects off Ramos for a corner, which Real clear.

12 mins:First chance falls to Real! Higuain wriggles free inside the United area and creates half a yard of space before firing his shot wide from about 15 yards. Should have at least worked De Gea. Cleverley, by the way, is fine to carry on.

12 mins:First chance falls to Real! Higuain wriggles free inside the United area and creates half a yard of space before firing his shot wide from about 15 yards. Should have at least worked De Gea.

10 mins:Giggs does well to break up a Madrid attack on the edge of his own box before the game is stopped due to an injury to Cleverley, who came out second best in a 50-50 with Ronaldo.

7 mins:Promising start by Madrid. Most of the action has been in the United half. The Spanish side force the first corner, but Van Persie nods the ball to safety from the near post.

4 mins:Ronaldo goes for goal from the free-kick but cannons the ball straight into a three-man wall, leading to cheers from United's feverish fans. The angle was always against him.

3 mins:Giggs's first involvement on his landmark appearance is to bring down Coentrao about 15 yards outside the United area down Real's left side. Free-kick to the visitors. You don't need to be Poirot to work out who's taking it.

0 mins:United's fans give their former idol a standing ovation as Ronaldo's name is read out by the stadium announcer. Ronny acknowledges them with wave. Real get us underway. Remember, away goals do count. United will go through with a win or goalless draw. But I can't see it being the latter.

1941:The players are on their way out to the pitch. Madrid are being forced to dress like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles because their all-white home kit clashes with United's first-choice white shorts and the hosts have refused to compromise by swapping to black. Apparently that's upset Real's players who are a bit superstitious about wearing green. I don't blame them - nobody wants to wear the colours of Plymouth Argyle.

1932:John from Scarborough predicts, "Ronaldo first scorer to win me a grand. The cabbage patch at the theatre of shattered dreams will not stop a masterclass from Madrid. 3-1 to Real." Most of you reckon this will be a goalfest. Adrian from Telford says, "Hope Man United win or a 4-4 draw 150/1 can't see it happening though!" I hope you haven't raided your piggy bank. "My bet's 5-2 to Real," adds Craig from Airdrie.

1919:Chris from Exeter says, "Strange MU team selection - Danny ahead of Wayne and Chicharito? Fergie doesn't trust hat-trick boy Kagawa either." Mossa adds, "Think we're in for a real treat. You must be mad if you think you can get rid of the Red Devils at this stage. One thing guaranteed - Ronnie to get hero's welcome."

1915:So what do you make of Fergie's selection shocker? Norma from Doncaster isn't too fussed about Rooney being dropped, texting, "Glad Giggsy is playing. I like the news that Rooney is on the bench - best place for him but where is Hernandez?" Chicharito is amongst the subs.

1902:Jose Mourinho has made one change from the first leg, with Gonzalo Higuain preferred to Karim Benzema in attack. Cristiano Ronaldo, returning to Old Trafford for the first time since 2009, obviously starts.

1855:Sir Alex Ferguson has made six changes in total from United's 4-0 win over Norwich but it's the shock omission of Rooney which will get the prawn-sandwich brigade itching their heads. Shinji Kagawa will also be disappointed to miss out on a place in the XI after his hat-trick against the Canaries. It appears Robin van Persie will be flanked by Nani and Danny Welbeck, who scored United's goal at the Bernabeu. Scroll down to see the full side.

1843:Breaking team news from Old Trafford - Wayne Rooney has been dropped to the bench, while Ryan Giggs starts and will therefore make the 1,000th senior appearance of his career. More in a tick.

match report

Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford to dump 10-man Manchester United out of the UEFA Champions League as Real Madrid triumphed 2-1 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate.

The second leg of the last-16 encounter turned firmly in the favour of the side from Spain the moment referee Cuneyt Cakir brandished a shock red card to Nani in the 56th minute following the winger's clumsy, but not malicious, high challenge on Alvaro Arbeloa.

United had edged ahead on aggregate shortly after the interval as Sergio Ramos could only divert Nani's drilled low cross into his own net after it had flicked off the foot of Danny Welbeck, with Sir Alex Ferguson's side in the ascendency at that point.

But Nani's dismissal sparked a spell of Real pressure which United could not withstand, as substitute Luka Modric, sent on for Arbeloa, curled home a delicious strike from the edge of the box in the 66th minute.

And, somewhat inevitably, it was former Manchester United favourite Ronaldo who had the final say, sliding in at the far post to convert Gonzalo Higuain's drilled cross-shot after the striker's mesmerising one-two with Mesut Ozil.

Ferguson sprang a major surprise with his team selection, leaving Wayne Rooney on the bench and tasking Welbeck with nullifying the threat of Xabi Alonso, a job he performed excellently, particularly in the opening 45 minutes, until Nani's exit left United a man down.

Ryan Giggs was named in the starting XI for his 1,000th senior career appearance and lined up in an unfamiliar role on the right of midfield, providing additional protection to full-back Rafael against the danger posed by Ronaldo on his first appearance back at Old Trafford.

United came closest to breaking the deadlock in the opening period, when Giggs' fine corner from the right was met with a thumping header by Nemanja Vidic which crashed back off the upright before striking Welbeck and then landing between Diego Lopez's legs.

Ferguson stressed the importance of his side taking their chances at the interval and they responded immediately as Giggs and Rafael combined down the right, before Welbeck and Van Persie were kept out, only for Nani to pick Raphael Varane's pocket and force Ramos to put through his own net.

But the Portuguese winger's dismissal left United under the cosh and, despite the impassioned urgings of Ferguson and Giggs to stir the home crowd, Modric and Ronaldo both found a way beyond the excellent David De Gea in the space of four minutes to crush their hopes.

To their credit, United were not bowed and created several chances to get back into the contest, with Lopez saving superbly from headers by Michael Carrick and Nemanja Vidic, while Rooney, who was eventually thrown on in the 73rd minute, blasting over when well placed.

But Real could have extended their advantage, with Ronaldo drawing two further excellent saves from De Gea, while Kaka's deflected shot from a tight angle on the left of the area struck the goalkeeper's near post and then his back, before the shot-stopper gratefully gathered on his own line.
