Everton ended League One Oldham's valiant cup run to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals, winning their fifth-round replay 3-1 at Goodison Park.
Kevin Mirallas settled any early nerves for the Toffees and Leighton Baines fired home from the spot to put the Premier League side in complete control at the interval. Leon Osman glanced in a third for Everton, meaning a solitary replay from Matt Smith could not prevent David Moyes' men from booking a home date with Wigan Athletic in the last eight.
Despite the absence of injured talisman Marouane Fellaini, Everton began firmly on the front foot. A sharp turn of pace from Mirallas forced Jonathan Grounds to bring him down on the edge of the area, with Baines sending a third-minute free-kick into the wall.
Oldham looked to use the pace of left-winger Jordan Obita in the early stages, but a pair of attempted though balls from Jose Baxter were misplaced when trying to send clear the man who opened the scoring in the first game. That honour on this occasion went to Mirallas, who applied the finish to Darron Gibson's superb cross from the right.
Oldham were almost back on terms immediately as Baxter collected Lee Barnard's lay off to launch an exquisite lofted effort over Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard from 25 yards and against the upright. James Tarkowski then engaged in an unseemly grapple with Nikica Jelavic as Seamus Coleman delivered from the right by-line but, although Michael Oliver missed that indiscretion, the referee pointed to the spot when the cross struck full-back Connor Brown's outstretched arm. Bouzanis got a hand to Baines' 34th-minute penalty but there was sufficient power for the ball to slip underneath him and into the net.
The game followed a similar pattern after half-time with Phil Jagielka lashing over when well placed before Osman failed to connect cleanly as Coleman provided further ammunition from the right flank. In the 55th minute, Latics introduced Smith in place of the ineffective Chris Iwelumo. Their attacks briefly acquired renewed vigour and fellow replacement Robbie Simpson, on for Obita, forced Neville to into a last-ditch clearance behind, while Lee Croft rifled a shot that glanced the side-netting.
But Everton responded by extending their lead slightly fortuitously in the 62nd minute. Steven Pienaar's in-swinging ball from the left was glanced goalwards by Osman, a header that evaded both Jelavic's outstretched boot and Bouzanis' fumbling attempts to gather.
This time Oldham did find a quick response through an increasingly familiar source - Smith allowed far too much space to power home Grounds' corner.
Caretaker boss Tony Philliskirk, on his way to a first defeat in five games at the helm, urged his side forward but that left spaces on the counter-attack, most notably when Gibson should have added late gloss to the scoreline.
live match commentary
90+4 mins: That's full time! Everton are deservedly through to the last eight where they'll host Wigan. They led 3-0 but Smith's arrival brought another goal from the bench and hope for Oldham. No dream comeback this time though, as the Toffees held firm to set up an encounter with the 'other' Latics. Thanks for following and for all your texts during the game - a full report will follow...
90+2 mins: Tarkowski sends a long ball into the box, Smith meets it eight yards out but his header's only a few yards to Howard's left and it's an easy take for the keeper!
90 mins: Three minutes added on as Distin concedes a corner down the left... Baxter sends it in but Tarkowski gives yet another foul away for yet another barge on Howard.
89 mins: Second change by Moyes, Hitzlsperger replacing Pienaar for his first appearance since the third round.
87 mins: Simpson charges into Howard as they compete for a poor ball in by Tarkowski. The sub injures himself - and Howard - and rightly picks up the first yellow card of the night. Howard's still down having treatment as he jogs away.
84 mins: Gibson blazes over! He's set up via a lovely outside-of-the-boot roller by Jelavic in the box but lashes high into the stand from 12 yards! The Toffees make their first change, Mirallas making way for Naismith.
81 mins: Barnard agonisingly can't get a shot in from the edge of the box, the ball just won't come down for him (I detest that phrase but it's the only one to hand) before it's intercepted.
79 mins: Back to the football... Mirallas wriggles through down the right of the box and does well to win a corner on the far side. He takes it himself, Simpson heads clear, Gibson has a crack but it's blocked.
77 mins: Oh! Favourite cover versions, we've had some in! My colleague Mr Mike Dale has just texted, sweaty and victorious from his Harrogate League squash semi final, with "Strawberry Fields by Candy Flip!" While Abacus from Halifax says: "My fav cover version is blondie's Denis Denis". Showing your age there, Abacus ;-)
76 mins: Oldham swap a right-back for a midfielder, Brown making way for Wesolowski.
74 mins: Everton win a free-kick down the left, level with the edge of the box. Mirallas hooks it in towards the back stick where it's headed behind for a corner. It's played short between Pienaar and Mirallas but they're closed down and it's cleared. The Blues are applying most of the pressure now.
72 mins: I'm remaining as impartial as ever, but if Everton *could* grab another goal that'd be lovely, as it'll scoop me Ł28. Anyone else in the money yet?
70 mins: Smith lands awkwardly on the shoulder which he injured against Liverpool and saw him sidelined for three weeks. The bigger they come, the harder they fall.
68 mins: Brown's set free in acres of space down the right, he whips in a cross but Barnard's header lacks power and it's an easy take for an unchallenged Howard.
66 mins: Hindsight and all that, but why didn't the Latics play Smith from the start? Anyway... Gibson sends a free-kick in from the right but it's hoofed clear.
64 mins: IT'S NOT ALL OVER! SMITH PULLS ONE BACK! The big man's come off the bench and done it again! Oldham win a corner down the right and he rises highest to power a header home from six yards!
63 mins: OSMAN SURELY WRAPS IT UP! Pienaar crosses from the left, Osman's flick header bounces into the six-yard box and Jelavic's run in front of Bouzanis puts the keeper off, the ball bouncing past him without the striker getting a touch!
61 mins: The Latics look a different side since that double sub, with bags of vigour all over the park. It they can nab a goal it'd be a nervy finale at Goodison.
59 mins: Croft goes close! Smith feeds Brown down the right, his neat ball sets Croft up and he rattles a decent effort two yards wide from the edge of the box!
Phil, Warrington: "Meat pie sausage roll come on oldham give us a goal."
56 mins: Simpson's nearly in there! What an introduction that would have been - in fact most of the Oldham fans think he's scored, but it's an Everton boot at the far post which diverts the ball in the side netting for a corner. Fruitless, though.
54 mins: Double sub for Oldham as supersub Smith takes centre stage, along with Simpson, the hero from the third round at Forest. Iwelumo and Obita make way.
52 mins: Coleman dashes down the right and gets a cross into the middle of the box, Osman meets it on the stretch but his prod simply loops up into Bouzanis' arms. Man-mountain Smith's getting stripped on the sidelines...
49 mins: Corner to the Blues on the left which has Distin trundling forward. Mirallas' delivery is cleared but Everton soon have the ball back in the box, it breaks to Jagielka who thrashes a hurried effort high and wide from ten yards.
47 mins: (Mine's 'Step On' by the Happy Mondays. Yes, it IS a cover version actually - the original was by John Kongos in 1971. Google it, pop pickers!)
46 mins: The Toffees get the second half started playing right to left with no subs to report. Ta for your texts on the game as ever, but NO favourite cover versions yet? Pfff...
Nick, Bacup: "Was hoping jelavic may turn the corner tonight, but he still looks like he couldnt hit a cows bum with a banjo!"
Griff, Battersea: "Jelevic is a shadow of last season. Wont relax till we get a 3rd."
Sarah: "'come on Oldham, the "bitters" are there for the taking'???? Oh the irony of THAT statement"
45+1 mins: That's half time! Everton look comfortable at the break but they've had Lady Luck on their side - Mirallas looked a shade offside for the opener, while Baxter hit the post for the Latics. No arguments about Baines' penalty to double the Blues' lead, but both sides have also had one blatant spot-kick turned down. It's a long way back for Oldham, but with giant supersub Matt Smith on the bench, anything's possible. Join me at 2050 for the second half, and keep your texts on the game coming via the box on the right.
45 mins: Just the one minute added on at Goodison as Osman tries to get a shot in on the stretch but it pops up and plops into Bouzanis' grasp.
42 mins: Oldham send a free-kick into the box but again ref Oliver blows up for a foul on Howard, this time by Tarkowski. Oldham are wasting decent chances at set pieces, especially with Fellaini not on the pitch.
39 mins: Everton's turn to attack. Coleman gets in behind Obita down the right flank, he drifts a cross into the box which picks out Jelavic, impressive hang-time by the Croat but he plonks his header way over the bar from ten yards!
36 mins: Oldham are pushing up and playing some neat stuff as they bid to get back into the game. Baxter whips a corner in from the left, it's right under the bar but the whistle blows after Howard's impeded by Mvoto.
34 mins: BAINES DOUBLES THE LEAD! He blasts his spot-kick inside the right post, Bouzanis gets a hand to it but is beaten by the sheer power!
33 mins: Penalty to Everton! Jelavic is tugged back in the box but the foul's not given, ref Oliver does blow up though when Tarkowski sticks an arm out to divert the ball to safety! Up steps Baines...
30 mins: The corner comes in from the left and Osman meets it but his 16-yard header is deflected over for a goalkick.
29 mins: Great stop by Bouzanis! Pienaar's run is halted on the left corner of the box, the loose ball falls to Baines who cracks a humdinger towards the left post from 22 yards! Strong hand by the keeper at his near post to concede the corner.
27 mins: Osman feeds Jelavic in the box who mis-kicks with Mvoto getting a vital foot in before hoofing clear.
24 mins: Blatant penalty turned down for the hosts! Tarkowski has a firm grasp of Jelavic's shirt as he tries to get on the end of a ball into the box, the striker eventually going over! At least the ref has evened it up...
21 mins: Mirallas drives a cross in but Mvoto steers it clear. Oldham are having to weather plenty of Everton pressure at the mo with Osman and Gibson pulling the strings.
18 mins: Oldham are denied by the woodwork! The League One side nearly peg the big boys straight back, Baxter's beautiful curling shot coming back off the right post with Howard well beaten! Then the Latics have a clear penalty turned down, Jagielka's clearance clocking Gibson square on the arm in the box! Nothing doing says ref Oliver!
15 mins: MIRALLAS FIRES THE TOFFEES AHEAD! The Blues win the first corner of the night but it's cleared by the first man. Everton keep the pressure on and Gibson whips a peach of a ball in from the right for the on-rushing Mirallas to hit it on the bounce from six yards past Bouzanis! Was he a shade offside though?
14 mins: Pienaar gives away a free-kick out on the right, 50 yards from goal, but it's lofted straight in to Howard's arms by Baxter.
12 mins: Jagielka's ball to Osman is cut out in midfield and Obita threatens to go clear but a foot in sees it run out of play.
10 mins: Oldham knock the ball round with ease in midfield before it gets a little ragged, Mirallas puts pressure on at the back and Oldham are relieved to see a deflection go out for a goalkick.
8 mins: The Goodison Tannoy (the loudest in the world) asks all the Oldham fans to sit down. Best of luck with enforcing that.
6 mins: Gibson sweeps a lush ball out to Osman, he feeds Pienaar on the edge of the box but a foot in by Brown sees the move break down and Oldham can clear.
4 mins: Grounds gives away a free-kick 22 yards out for a trip on Mirallas. Baines curls it into the wall though, before the threat of an Oldham break is snuffed out with a long ball back to Howard.
2 mins: Oldham make the brighter start with Croft and Iwelumo bidding to make inroads down the right, but being crowded out on both occasions.
0 mins: The Latics get us under way playing right to left in eye-popping orange shirts, blue shorts and orange socks. Keep your texts coming, I'll weave the best ones in. Bonus points for good spelling and punctuation.
1943: As ever, the theme from Z Cars heralds the arrival of the teams at this grand old stadium. We're ready to rock and roll, with Wigan awaiting the winners in the quarter-finals...
Jake, Belfast: Matt Smith to cause more havoc tonight! Come on the underdogs!
1935: My excitement has already peaked for the night, as ITV soundtracked their preview montage with Rage Against The Machine's cover of MC5's 'Kick Out The Jams'. It's all downhill from there, kids. Kick off's in ten minutes. Keep your texts on tonight's scoreline coming. And favourite cover versions, if you fancy.
Tash, Long Eaton: "Oldham 2-0. But if Everton have a good first half. 4-0 to Everton. Yes I am sitting on the fence."
Phil, St.Austell: "Hoping that my beloved blues are not beginning to fade at this stage of the season...5-0 would be nice but got a feeling it will be close knowing us...oh to be an Evertonian! COYB"
Griff, Battersea: "Come on Toffees, dont care who scores, i want this game over by HT."
1915: Evening all, and welcome to Orange's live commentary on the FA Cup fifth-round replay at Goodison Park, with a home tie against Wigan in the quarter-finals up for grabs. Crashing straight on with the team news and Everton make two changes from the defeat at Norwich, with captain Phil Neville and Kevin Mirallas coming into the starting line-up, while Steven Naismith and Marouane Fellaini drop out - the latter's not even on the bench. Oldham are unchanged from the side which beat Portsmouth at the weekend. That means former Everton youngster Jose Baxter starts, with supersub Matt Smith on the bench once more. I'll bring you live commentary on the clash from 1945, but in in the mean time feel free to text me your match predictions and any bets you've got on tonight by scribbling in the box on the right. I've got a whole two English pounds on 4-1 to the Toffees - how about you?
Dave, Liverpool: "Hopefully we'll get an early goal tonight and kill the game.don't want no late jitters.a chance for jelavic to find his shooting boots."
Nick, Bacup: "come on everton! a good win here tonight can kick-start the season, and hopefully persuade moyes to stay."
