The £7m signing of Johnson remains one of the biggest sticks used by Leeds fans to beat hated ex-chairman Peter Ridsdale. The tale of his contract negotiations with Johnson are folkloric. The story goes that the Derby midfielder went in hoping for £13,000 a week, but Ridsdale opened negotiations at £30,000. Johnson replied, "Are you joking?", so Ridsdale raised the offer even higher.
