Sao Paulo have a history of landing massive fees but quite how they persuaded Real Betis to part with £21.5 million for left winger Denilson back in 1998 - at the time making him the world's most expensive footballer - when he had played just 50 first-team matches in Brazil is a mystery. Remarkably he kept his place in the Brazil side despite doing very little of note for Betis.
