Schumacher made his F1 debut with Jordan in 1991 after his Mercedes backers paid $150,000 to team boss Eddie Jordan. He qualified in seventh before a clutch problem denied him the chance to race after the first lap. He was subsequently snapped up by Benetton for the rest of the season where he picked up three points finishes in five races.
