It was a season that opened with uncertainty as the, to some extent, unknown 2012 Pirelli tyres were properly put to the test for the first time in race conditions. McLaren got the best out of them as Lewis Hamilton snatched pole and then Jenson Button, also on the front row of the grid, got the jump on his team-mate for a lead he held to the chequered flag. Button said: "As a team it really shows how important the winter is. We had a strong winter and it's nice to come away with a win."
