Dorothy Paget, who owned seven Cheltenham Gold Cup winners including the legendary Golden Miller, was a truly eccentric character. Her biggest one-off bet was £160,000 (the equivalent today of about £4million) to win just £20 and she lost £100,000 in 1948 alone. Bookmakers employed staff to stay up all night just to take her bets as she preferred to sleep in the day. She even bet on races that had previously been run by professing she did not know the results.
